Aubrey Malone traces the life of the screen legend from Dublin, where she grew as a child, up to the heights of Hollywood. He draws information from Irish Film Institute production notes for film productions as well as old magazines and newspapers. Malone explores the actresses relationship with frequent film co-star John Wayne as well as the relationship she had together with John Ford. Malone addresses the controversial issue of whether she was feminist or antifeminist. Though she was an icon of film's golden era, her tendency to keep her privacy private and the tendency to make public declarations which contradicted her own personal beliefs make her an unpopular figure. This impressive biography offers the reader an insight into the person behind the bigger-than-life photograph. It dispels the legends that surround her, providing an unfiltered view of one of Hollywood's greatest images.
